In his work from the early 1920s, French painter Fernand Leger created images of humans interacting with machines. Indeed, his bold, block and cylindrical figures have a mechanical quality to them. By the 1930s and 1940s, however, the artist had moved on to depicting a different style of union — acrobats and divers with intertwined arms and limbs.
